Lessons From the Tackle Box

Lesson 1 - Power of the Written Word

Men seem to find any number of reasons to avoid writing down their thoughts to those they care about. “I can’t spell”, “My hand writing is terrible”, “It won’t come out right.”, “I can never find the right words.”

We talk for hours about our favorite sports team, hunting, fishing, or computers. But combine a few sentences for a loved one? No way! Are we hopeless? Or do we just need a push in the right direction, some great tools, and a pattern to follow? In this lesson you'll learn that, with a little effort, you can produce a treasure.

Lesson 2 - Power of the Spoken Blessing

God spoke, things happened, creation took shape, bodies were healed, lives were transformed. He alters the course of history with a word. Your words may not move mountains but they can move hearts. What we say has great impact on the lives we touch. A single word can encourage a soul and lift the spirit. Men often forget the power of words. We can be careless in our criticism. Words build up or tear down and they can change the trajectory of your families’ future.

In Lesson 2, we’ll study the 4 components of “The Blessing”, what it is and what it is not.

Lesson 3 - Power of a Visual Legacy

When Apollo 11 landed on the moon, its guidance system didn’t have the computing power of today’s fancy bagel toasters. Today, we can snap a photo, add a comment, and send it around the world in just seconds! Social media has exploded. There are now 2.5 billion social network users around the globe. Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, Twitter and myriad other outlets make it all too easy to be heard.

So what do we do with it? Do we ignore it? Resist it? Embrace it? Can it can be used for good in spite of all its negative aspects?

Lesson 4 - The Power of Prayer

Nothing significant happens without earnest, effective prayer. In Lesson 4, our assignment is very significant. It requires earnest, effective prayer if we are going to complete it. You will write the final letter of your life. The letter that no one in your family reads until you go home to be with Jesus. You may think “That is the most morbid, depressing thing I’ve ever heard! Why in the world would I want to do that?!”

Greg will help you understand why this letter is so vital for your family.

Lesson 5 -Your Story for God's Glory

PANIC! The feeling you get when you know you should share the gospel. You freeze, “I don’t know what to say”, “What if they ask me a question I can’t answer?”, “What if they don’t like what I tell them?”. These and many other fears may run through your mind and paralyze your witness. You may feel inadequate and, as a result, keep quiet and fail to share the good news. You are not alone. Many Christians lay claim to this dilemma.

Greg discusses this problem and shares some solid practical ideas on how to overcome that reluctance.

A Lost Art - Video Introduction

Reg Grant, professor, actor, author, father, and creative writer. The Lost Art of Letter Writing will help men to see that writing is not the daunting task it seems to be. Rather it can be an uplifting and fun exercise. Reg keeps the lessons light and entertaining with his classic wit wisdom. Learn how to communicate in a way you never thought possible.

Session 1 - WRITE!

Just do it! Writing begins when you actually sit down, take a breath, and put pen to paper (or fingers to keyboard). Anyone can write a letter, even you. Reg begins with some of the basics of a letter. First and foremost is to get it down on paper. Editng can take place later. Get down the essentials and sort it out as you go along. It's not as hard as we can sometimes make it out to be.

Session 2 - REWRITE!

OK, now you have it down. Now is the time to go back and do little re-arranging. What looks good, what doesn't? What's your style? Don't be afraid to just be yourself.

Listen as Reg gives some excellent advice on how to create your own style and use it to convey your thoughts to those you care about.

Session 3 - IMAGING!

There is nothing better than a good word picture. It helps us visualize an event, a person or a place. Reg will help you learn how to create word pictures that will engage and excite your readers. Don't let it scare you. You can do it!

God gave us amazing brains that can take anything we hear, see or feel and turn it into a picture in our mind. Learn how to take a few words and make them come alive.

Session 4 - TEST & EDIT!

Doesn't it drive you crazy when someone takes 5 minutes to tell you something that could have been done in 30 seconds? That can also happen in writing. More words do not always mean more understanding. Learn to test your writing and edit as needed. Concise, sharp editing can turn a good letter into a great one.
